Agentic AI and generative AI are not the same problem for SEO
The two terms get used interchangeably and they should not be. A generative system produces text: it reads sources and writes an answer. An agentic system does things: it books, compares, fills forms, completes tasks across sites on the user's behalf.
For SEO the difference is concrete. Generative visibility is about being quoted in an answer. Agentic visibility is about your site being usable by a machine that is trying to complete a task: clean structure, predictable navigation, machine readable key facts, no dark patterns in the way.
A fuller comparison of what each means for optimisation work is in this piece on agentic versus generative AI for SEO.
If you only prepare for one right now, prepare for generative, because it is already here. But the structural work that helps agents is the same work that helps everything else, so it is not wasted.
